The short answer is simply that each of the six items AMR has listed strike to the very core of the Christian faith both generally and specifically. They affect basic personal salvation most particularly. As such they are not merely items peripheral in nature or of simple secondary differences of opinion (as would be the case, for example, regarding differences regarding mode of water baptism, the order of eternal decreees or forms of church government etc.). This is why AMR wrote so strongly regarding correct. Concerning what gospel is preached, was my question. And you have given honest answer. The gospel the SDA preaches is not the same as that of the historical Reformed faith. Which is the basis for my considering the SDA unsound. There is only one gospel of grace, and that consists of the message that sinners are justified by faith in Jesus Christ, alone. The SDA message is one of grace plus works, which is the common message of all false or apostate religions. "Arminianism" is not a church denomination or a closed community like the SDA. It is a wrong system of thinking that has crept into many churches, leading them into apostasy, and perverting the gospel first proclaimed by the faithful Protestants and Reformed fathers. Here is the true gospel that Luther and the Reformed fathers taught: ". . By the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin. But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets; even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference, for all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare His righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God: To declare, I say, at this time His righteousness: that He might be just, and the justifier of Him which believeth in Jesus. Where is boasting then? It is excluded. By what law? of works? Nay: but by the law of faith. Is Ellen G. White a False Prophet? The Bible lists five identifying marks of false prophets: (1) through signs and wonders they lead astray after false gods (<a href="http://biblia.com/bible/nkjv/Dt.%2013.1-4" target="_blank">Dt. 13:1-4</a>); (2) their prophecies don't come to pass (<a href="http://biblia.com/bible/nkjv/Dt.%2018.20-22" target="_blank">Dt. 18:20-22</a>); (3) they contradict God's Word (<a href="http://biblia.com/bible/nkjv/Isa.%208.20" target="_blank">Isa. 8:20</a>); (4) men speak well of them (<a href="http://biblia.com/bible/nkjv/Lk.%206.26" target="_blank">Lk. 6:26</a>); and (5) they deny that Jesus, the one and only Christ, has come once and for all in the flesh (<a href="http://biblia.com/bible/nkjv/1%20Jn.%204.3" target="_blank">1 Jn. 4:3</a>), thereby denying His sufficiency in all matters of life and godliness (<a href="http://biblia.com/bible/nkjv/2%20Pe.%201.3" target="_blank">2 Pe. 1:3</a>). So does the SDA position on Ellen White constitute them as cultic? Most cults are founded upon false prophecies. Seventh-Day Adventism originated with false prophesies about Christ's coming. It began with William Miller's prediction that Christ would return in 1843 (revised to October 22, 1844). Miller admitted his error. However, SDA prophetess Ellen G. White, who had repeatedly endorsed Miller's prophecy, insisted that Christ had indeed come, but not to earth. Instead, He had entered "the holy of holies" in heaven "to make an atonement for all who are shown to be entitled to its benefits" (The Great Controversy, p. 480). "Fundamental Beliefs of Seventh-Day Adventists (# 17)" states: "The Gift of Prophecy: One of the gifts of the Holy Spirit is prophecy. This gift is an identifying mark of the remnant church and was manifested in the ministry of Ellen G. White. As the Lord's messenger, her writings are a continuing and authoritative source of truth which provide for the church comfort, guidance, instruction, and correction." Yet Ellen G. White made numerous false prophecies: that "Old Jerusalem never would be built up" (Early Writings, p. 75), that she would be alive at the Rapture (Early Writings, pp. 15-16), that Christ would return before slavery was abolished (Early Writings, pp. 35, 276), that Adventists living in 1856 would be alive at the Rapture (Testimonies for the Church, Vol. 3, pp. 131-132), and many more. Nevertheless, Seventh-Day Advenists revere this false prophet's writings as if they were Scripture. Ellen G. White taught this salvation by works and keeping of the law. Many quotes could be given to prove that Ellen G. White taught salvation by works. Here are a few: (a) "Our acts, our words, even our most secret motives, all have their weight in deciding our destiny ... though ... forgotten by us, they [our works] will bear their testimony to justify or condemn" (TGC, pp. 486-490). (b) "When any have sins remaining upon the books of record, unrepented of and unforgiven, their names will be blotted out of the book of life ..." (TGC, p. 483). (c) "Each one of you needs to ... [be] working with your might to redeem the failures of your past life. God has placed you in a world of suffering to prove you, to see if you will be found worthy of the gift of eternal life" (Testimonies for the Church, Vol. 3, p. 530). Is Seventh-Day Adventism a cult? Yes. What is a Cult? A cult may be identified by an examination of a group's doctrine of salvation. A proper biblical understanding of salvation is absolutely essential to the Christian religion. There is only one way of salvation. If a group has departed from that which the Scripture declares concerning this doctrine, then we must conclude that it has departed from Christianity. It does not matter, "what, or how many other important doctrines" one might proclaim. When a group leaves or distorts the essential doctrine of "salvation by grace through faith" we must conclude that a departure from Biblical Christianity has taken place. Simply defined, a cult is a group of people who claim to be Christian but have voided the essential message of salvation. If Adventism, (or Mormonism, or Jehovah's Witnesses, or Roman Catholicism) has done this, then these groups are cults and not branches of the Christian Church. Adventism has, with its doctrines of works righteousness, Investigative Judgment, and Sanctuary Cleansing surely departed from the Biblical view. I believe the SDA (as a movemnet/Denomination) is outside the bounds of biblical christianity, however, I have met some very wonderful Christians who have been in the SDA church. I believe one may indeed be a Christian and yet also be a Seventh-day Adventist.
